Meet Kena Dorsey, a seasoned quilter with over two decades of experience in the art form. Originally hailing from Pittsburgh, PA, Kena's quilting journey began when she moved to Harlem, NYC, where she resided for 18 years before embarking on a new chapter in Los Angeles, CA. As a self-taught quilter, Kena initially delved into the world of traditional piecing, mastering the fundamental techniques and patterns. However, her artistic influences soon shaped her unique quilting style. Immersed in the rich cultural atmosphere of Harlem, Kena drew inspiration from renowned figures of the Harlem Renaissance, such as Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden, and Langston Hughes. This influence sparked her fascination with portrait quilts, leading her to create captivating raw edge appliqué story and art quilts that celebrate African American people. With every stitch, she weaves together a tapestry that honors the past while embracing the present, creating quilts that are as visually captivating as they are emotionally resonant.
